The business case

There is a shortage of key skills in the UK economy and in areas like engineering the problem is reaching a critical point. But there are refugees in the UK with these skills who are working in jobs that do not make the most of their skills, or not working at all. Hiring a refugee with the skills you need also helps you to realise the benefits of a diverse workforce.

Return on Investment

Every hire is an investment. You have to invest some time and effort to ensure refugee professionals make it into your talent pipeline and we help you overcome potential barriers, such as unconscious bias and effective skills assessment. Our retention rates are outstanding. The return on your investment in a refugee professional is potentially greater and the risk lower.

Why? Firstly, because during the Positive Action Placement (PAP) you pay the candidate the London Living Wage and a £600 placement management fee to us, while you get to see how well suited the candidate is to the role and your organisation. Secondly, if you go on to hire the candidate they will be hugely motivated and more likely to stay with you for longer, which is a cost saving. The Transitions London 15% fees (of gross salary) are the same as most agencies, with far higher social value. You can reduce staff turnover and performance by mixing things up a little.

are the same as most agencies, with far higher social value.

If your staff see teams made up of different kinds of people it breaks down the ‘them and us’ attitudes in an organisation and that leads to people contributing more and wanting to stay with your organisation.

But it’s not just about the way the team looks – if it’s diverse it will perform better. A diverse team that doesn’t share the same assumptions will look much harder at the facts and make more effort to verify those facts.

And when you bring people with different backgrounds, experiences and viewpoints together in one team, they are more likely to come up with innovative solutions.

Diversity as a business advantage

The evidence is clear; diversity gives a business a competitive edge. And when a candidate has experience in a region you are targeting the competitive benefits of hiring a refugee can also be very significant. But you can’t reap the benefits if you don’t have refugees in your talent pipeline.

The positive action pilot program (Engineers and Business Services professionals) we regard as very successful with a good permanent hire percentage. We plan to invest further this year and develop further the learning program content and framework.

Helen McCarthy, People Director, Arcadis

We have had really good feedback about him starting his permanent job. He was interviewed for both roles through a fair and objective process and hiring him was a no brainer. It was never seen as a compromise, or token nice gesture.
