Update from the GLA on Syrian Refugee Resettlement

From the GLA: Syrian Refugee resettlement in the UK – update for MRCOs The Mayor of London welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees from the Middle East region during this Parliament. London has a proud history of providing refuge to those seeking sanctuary and welcoming people escaping war and persecution and some Syrian refugees have already been resettled through this scheme in some London boroughs. The Mayor of London is working closely with Government and London boroughs to agree how London can provide a sustainable offer of support to resettled Syrian refugees. We believe many of the barriers to London’s participation in the Government’s resettlement scheme can be overcome through an innovative multi-stakeholder model which capitalises on the wealth of resources, expertise and good-will in London. We see communities as being at the heart of a successful resettlement model in London and we will be ensuring we adopt a multi-stakeholder approach to both design and delivery of a London model for the resettlement of Syrian refugees. The Mayor’s Migrant and Refugee Advisory Panel (MRAP) has provided extremely useful feedback on our initial thinking which will inform the development of London’s response. Key feedback from MRAP was to ensure that Syrian communities are involved in the design and delivery of the resettlement scheme in London. Please let us know if you have contact with national, London-based or local Syrian associations, community organisations or individuals who may be interested in helping us in the design or delivery of resettlement in London. We will continue to update you on London’s response to resettlement in London.
